IMS Treatment by Pleasantview Physiotherapy
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is an effective treatment for chronic pain of neuropathic origin. The technique involves the use of sterilized needles (similar to acupuncture needles) that penetrate the skin and the underlying muscle. The effects are cumulative. The needling stimulates a certain amount of healing, until eventually, the condition and the pain disappears. This treatment relieves chronic pain such as headaches, ‘whiplash,’ backache, tennis elbow, or frozen shoulder.
IMS Treatments are usually once a week for a half hour. In published studies of patients with low back pain, the average number of IMS treatments required was 8.2. The number of treatments the individual needs depends on several factors:
- Duration of the condition
- Severity of the condition
- Amount of scar tissue to be treated
- Body heal time
